Eravikulam National Park

On the way to Marayoor, about 12km from the town is the Eravikulam National Park. Grasslands and mountain peaks co-exist here. This national park is the second most famous one in the state. The place is most celebrated for the endangered Nilgiri Tahr. About half of the world's Nilgiri Tahrs are located within this park. The second reason for the park's prominence is the 'Neelakurinji' flower that blooms once in 12 years. During the season the whole mountain range turns blue with the blooms.

With prior permission from the Wildlife DFO, Munnar, you can trek inside the park. It is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The government operates bus service within the park as private vehicles aren't allowed inside. Besides the Nigiri Tahr, the park is famous for Lion-tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Leopards, Nilgiri marten, Ruddy mongoose, Small clawed otter, Dusky striped sqirrel, Atlas Moth, Elephants, Sambar and Gaur. The national park is under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site.
