Trekking/cycling In Munnar

Trekking MunnarIn Munnar, you have the option of trekking amid tea plantations as well as in the forests. Chinnakanal, Anayirangal and Suryanelli are good places for trekking. From Anayirangal, you can trek down to the Anayirangal Lake, walk around it and move downstream. See up close the lives the tribals in the area. Breathe in the aroma from the cardamom and other spices plantations. You can trek up to a height of 2,600m on a sunny day. Be prepared to encounter an elephant herd or a group of deer.

There are many guided tour and trek agencies that take you out on various trekking packages. They provide you with cycles, jeeps, tents/camps, meals and trekking accessories. Walking tours are also common. Top Station is a good place for this. You can see the hill station of Kodaikanal from here.

Meesapulimala is the second highest peak in the Western Ghats. You will come across sholas, grasslands, waterfalls and mountain streams. Ramakkalmedu, Pullumedu and Kumbummedu are also popular trekking areas. Access to some of the places need prior permission from the wildlife warden. On a clear day, you can spot towns in nearby Theni district of Tamil Nadu.

CyclingChaturangapara and Shantanpara offer treks through cardamom and pepper plantations. An encounter with locals will give you an insight into the process of plucking and processing the spices. Near Suryanelli is the Mathikettan Shola National Park. You'll get to see gaur, sambar and elephants.

Kolukkumalai, practically in Tamil Nadu territory, is the world's highest tea estate and factory. It's quite a tedious trek up and down and would need some amount of stamina to climb and descend.
